In the English Language some words have the possibility of being shortened, when words are shortened they are also called contractions. Most popular universal organization have a shortened or contracted form. The contracted forms are called acronyms. Acronyms make words should and look shorter. Perhaps when writing an essay, you don’t want to say the United States of America all the time. Rather, you could occasionally just say the US and the same meaning will be portrayed. So what are acronyms?
Acronym: an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g. ASCII, NASA).
As we saw herein in another article (punctuation marks) most acronyms always have full stops between the letters. Note that this is optional.
Note further that acronyms appear in capital letters. If you choose to use the acronym of any word, ensure that it is in caps.

U.N -United Nations
U.S – United States
U.K – United Kingdom
A.U – African Union
E.U – European Union
C.I.A – Central Intelligence Agency
F.B.I – Federal Bureau of Investigation
AIDS- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Mr. – Mister
A.M – ante Meridiem
P.M -post Meridiem
I.e. – That is
E.g. – Example gratia
Cardinal points are also sometimes represented by acronyms e.g
N – North
S – South
W – West
NW – Northwest
SW – Southwest
NE – Northeast
